Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is proud to offer paid internship experience for a qualified student during the summer season. Under the supervision of the Conservation Project Manager, the student will gain an in-depth knowledge of collecting biodiversity data at a zoological/horticultural facility and engaging the public. At the completion of the internship, the intern will have a greater understanding of how planting methods can support native insect populations.
Essential Functions:
- Utilize different biodiversity sampling strategies to establish standardized protocol for Planting with a Purpose program
- Establish baseline data for designated Planting with a Purpose demonstration landscapes
- Contribute valuable information towards Riverbanks’ Planting with a Purpose program
- Engage with Riverbanks guests to explore pollinator biodiversity
- Present experience in the form of a lunch and learn to Riverbanks staff and volunteers
Scholarship Opportunity: The Weinkle Family Internship Scholarship at Riverbanks Zoo and Garden will be awarded annually to one or more students participating in a zookeeping or horticulture internship at Riverbanks. Scholarship opportunities will be need-based and made available to future zookeepers specifically but may also be awarded to future horticulturists. Participation in either of these areas will expose students to the zoo industry as well as the field of conservation and horticulture. Interested students should submit an up-to-500-word essay describing the reason for participating in Riverbanks’ internship program and the nature of financial need.
Education and Experience: Internships are open to qualified graduate and undergraduate students seeking degrees in biology, agricultural sciences, or related fields. Applicants must be able to work any day of the week, including weekends and holidays. This position will have duties that include bending, stooping or standing for long periods in all weather conditions.
